Information Security Legislation

This act is about crimes to do with computers. It covers:

• Unauthorised access to computer material
  • Accsessing a system without permission even if you dont touch anything
  • Guessing a password ect
  • Also includes installing software without consent
• Unauthorised access with intent to commit or facilitate a crime
  • Its same as above BUT you do it to help commit another crime
  • More serious
• Unauthorised modification of computer material
  • Changing, deleting, adding, even damaging it, without permission
  • includes:
    • Introducing viruses
    • deleting/altering records
    • Blocking access
    • Changing code

Who it covers?

• Any device, computer and network, Personal or otherwise
• Applies to attacks orriginating from elsewhere but directed at the UK
• Lots of penalties, ranging from fines to imprisonment

In summary:

The law pretty much makes it illegal to access use or even change IT systems without explicit permission
